SUN AND MOON, ICE AND SNOW by Jessica Day George | Kirkus ReviewsI'm torn. I seriously cannot decide which of the three retellings of East of the Sun West of the Moon was the best. All three had unique bits and pieces and details which set them apart and all three were written beautifully. This one had an old setting like East and a similarly enchanting prose. The female main character was a gutsy lass who raced against the odds and ice to rescue her white bear. She was a touch more curious than her other versions though.

But now that I've started reading these I'm really interested in reading and comparing each of the versions of the story. Pika finds out that Erasmus has been killed by the troll princess for saying too much about their enchantment. Only a grueling journey on the backs of the four winds will reveal the truth: the bear is really a prince who's been enchanted by a troll icd, and the Lass must come up with a way to free him before he's forced ajd marry a troll princess. Well.
Book confronts the white bear about it, as he is bound by the curse. This story was expertly told. Details if other :. George's version of the tale addresses these issues to some extent?
As I see it, there are two different ways to adapt a fairy tale into a full-length novel. Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow falls squarely into the latter category. Basically it all comes down to a likable heroine, a great story, wonderful Norwegian touches, and a tale that will age beautifully as the years go by. When it comes to adapting a fairy tale into a full-length novel, George writes with a steady hand. She never had a name, this small girl, the last born in her family.
From the lefsa to the white reindeer! It is not that they were evil ahd the trolls, but their behaviour was infuriating - it was so frustrating that no one ever stood up to them. Recommended to anyone who's looking for a solid fairytale retake or a decent young-adult fantasy novel. Pick up this book if you want to read something light and fairytale-ish. Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Sun And Moon, Ice And Snow Pika breaks an enchantment that has transformed a Prince into a bear, defeating a Troll Princess and rescuing her brother's lover in the process. Pika is the fourth daughter of a poor woodcutter who spends her time helping to tend the animals in her family farm. Her mother didn't have any use for girls and was very disappointed at Pika's birth so she refused to give her an official name. Instead, everyone calls her "Pika", which just means means "girl" in their language. One day, a white reindeer is spotted in Pika's village.
It is original and adventurous. Suj would like it if books came with chocolate to eat while reading them. For example, why would the troll princess love something as simple as a golden spindle or a golden carding comb. The only thing that I did not like was that I wanted more information on the White Reindeer.
And finally, watch Jessica discuss her book here:. There was no big climax or intensity when the story resolved. And I looked forward to how she would solve the puzzles she ran into, as well. I'm on a mission to read all the versions of this fairy tale that I own.The love still feels a little rushed I wish more time was spent with the bear but the time spent with the heroine's family is wonderful, and the girl herself, Askel, which will come in handy on her quest. She wanders the winter barrens for a while before encountering three old women. She also is suddenly able to speak to animals? One.
It was a fun book to read and kept me well entertained bpok there were several times where I did not want to stop reading. Notes on the Cover: Extra points for avoiding ye olde dismembered girl. Honestly speaking, I lost all interest when I reached her journey with the winds. The kind of thing everyone can enjoy, and many will.
